چکیده
Establishing the timing of human colonization eastern Pacific and developing cultural chronologies within island groups Eastern Polynesia has relied primarily on 14C dating. Despite advancements in dating, however, uncertainties introduced during calibration to calendar ages remain large relative tempo settlement ensuing Polynesian development. 230Th dating coral abraders, a common artifact archaeological sites, can potentially provide more precise ages. We report high-precision chronology for Kitchen Cave rockshelter Kamaka Island Mangareva (Gambier) Islands, based parallel series 13 AMS dates short-lived plant materials 19 Acropora abraders non-utilized branches. The results are highly consistent with from except two cases where corals younger than expected occupied what most likely intrusive contexts. Moreover, because techniques largely independent, obtaining via increases confidence resulting chronology. A reliable date 860 ± 5 CE basal layer sequence, whose deposition cannot readily be explained by natural processes, raises possibility an early visit some centuries prior initiation permanent occupation 11th 13th centuries. These confirm that branch applied other sites high degree confidence.

Echinophyllia tarae sp. n. (Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Scleractinia), a new reef coral species from the Gambier Islands, French Polynesia
A new shallow water scleractinian coral species, Echinophyllia tarae sp. n., is described from the Gambier Islands, French Polynesia. It is characterized by an encrusting corallum, a few large and highly variable corallites with protruding walls, and distinctive costosepta. This coral was observed in muddy environments where several colonies showed partial mortality and re-growth. The new speci...

We report the application of high-resolution in situ 238U-230Th disequilibrium dating to pyrochlore [(Ca,Na,REE,Th,U)2(Nb,Ti,Ta,Zr)2O6(OH,F)]. Compositionally zoned pyrochlore is an accessory phase in intrusive carbonatitic syenites, which were ejected as cognate clasts during the eruption of the phonolitic Laacher See volcano, East Eifel, Germany, 12.9 ka ago. Separated individual pyrochlore c...

متن کاملU/Th-dating living and young fossil corals from the central tropical Paci¢c
This study evaluates the accuracy of U/Th dates for young (6 a few thousand years old) reef corals, both living and fossil, and explores strategies for refining those dates. The high precision of the U/Th method (0 1^2%) for dating young corals is well-established. Earlier studies have demonstrated the method’s accuracy for select samples of known age. However, these studies have focused on typ...
